Biography

Dr. Shri Ramaswamy is Professor, Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering, University of Minnesota. He was head of the department for 14 years. He has degrees in chemical engineering and paper science and engineering and over nine years of pulp and paper and chemical industry experience in process and products engineering, process research and development, and chemical applications technology development.

Dr. Ramaswamy has been actively engaged in teaching, advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students specializing in the area of bioprocess and products engineering for over 26 years. Dr. Ramaswamy has made important contributions in topics related to transport through porous media, structure-property relationships, bio-based products properties and performance, and integrated biorefining including separations and purification technologies. Dr. Ramaswamy has published over 100 peer reviewed journal articles, book chapters, conference proceedings papers and other review articles related to pulp and paper manufacturing and lignocellulosic biomass conversion, separation and purification processes and process modeling of biorefineries.

Dr. Ramaswamy is a Fellow of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI), Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AICHE), Fellow of the International Academy of Wood Science (IAWS) and recipient of the AICHE Andrew Chase award. He has long standing involvement serving in various leadership capacities in the AICHE Forest Bioproducts Division, TAPPI and the Pulp and Paper Education and Research Alliance (PPERA). He is currently a co-lead for Renewable Bioproducts focus area in the RAPID Institute (Rapid Advancement in Process Intensification Deployment) (a manufacturing institute funded by USDOE).
