Where are you from?

Madison, WI.

Why did you choose this major?

I chose this major because it allows me to combine my academic passions of business and sustainability. I appreciated the ability to pursue sustainable solutions that are economically feasible and profitable.

What has been a favorite course,  project, or experience in the SSM/BBE program so far?

Over the summer I completed an internship with the City of Roseville which was an incredible opportunity and a very memorable experience. Through the internship program, I shadowed the city's sustainability specialist and together we participated in community outreach, and organized local sustainability events. My main role was to assist the municipality in implementing their 'green to go' ordinance which regulated the types of to-go containers that restaurants were able to use. This consisted of education, consultation and enforcement with business owners and upper management. Finally, the moment I am most proud of is coordinating the city's very first clothing swap. Through this event we were able to provide 2100 pounds of clothing to in-need families at no cost, while preventing these items from being thrown away. My favorite course in the program so far has been BBE 1201 or Renewable Energy, Climate Change, Society and the Environment because of the fun and interdisciplinary approach. My favorite projects so far have been industry analyses and systems thinking assignments because of the detail and collaboration required to complete them, their real life applications, and the discoveries that are made through their interpretation.

What student groups or extracurricular activities are you involved in and why?

Currently I am an officer for the SSM club as well as a BBE ambassador. I am also a frequent user of the BBE makerspace and held a class there teaching the basics of resin casting. I participate in these groups and activities to share creative space with my peers and continue to advocate for the BBE/SSM major, support students and promote sustainability!

What are your career goals after graduation?

Currently, I am interested in careers in corporate sustainability or manufacturing. Much of my work experience so far has been in the business world and I would love to guide various organizations to cost savings while reducing their environmental impact. In addition to this, I am interested in environmental advocacy work with local government bodies or non-profits. I love doing community outreach to teach others about environmental issues and why they are important. It is also very fulfilling to see the resulting impact that you can have on local communities.
