Meghan Pieper
Meghan Pieper graduated with a degree in Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering in 2019.

Why did you choose BBE while attending the University of Minnesota?

I knew I wanted to do engineering, but I also wanted to choose a major that focused on innovative and sustainable solutions. BBE was just that.

Where do you currently work, and what do you do?

I work at Puris as a process engineer, and I'm currently working on helping to start up a new pea protein plant in Dawson, MN. Once we're running, my focus will be on making sure we're running the process at the right conditions, troubleshooting to improve key measures, and working on projects to improve the process.

How has your education from BBE impacted or influenced your life and career?

BBE has given me a wide breadth of knowledge that allowed me flexibility in choosing a career. The chemical engineering fundamentals with an emphasis in bioproducts gave me an edge in getting noticed at the companies I was interested in. Additionally, the good relations BBE has with companies in the area are directly responsible for me finding both my internship with MnTAP as well as my current position.

What are one or two of your proudest professional or personal accomplishments that occurred after graduating from BBE in which your education played a role?

I'm very proud to be involved at such a cutting edge and innovative company that is at the forefront of sustainable agriculture and plant based protein solutions. Additionally, helping to start up a new plant, let alone the biggest pea protein plant in North America, is an experience not many young engineers have the opportunity to do.

What advice do you have for current or future students interested in pursuing a similar career in your field?

Find a company you WANT to work for. Loving what you do and having values that align with your company is essential and will help you be successful in whatever you do. And, don't throw away your books! They can be a big help in remembering how to solve certain problems.

Is there anything else you'd like to share with the BBE community?

There is more to life than just work. Make sure you lean into your hobbies and focus on your relationships outside of work as well!
