Capstone Sponsor Experience - Why do it?

August 22, 2022

We asked Charlie Schiappacasse (BBSEM alumnus), a research and development process engineer from Michael Foods, and Brian Weathers, President of HBW Solutions, to share why being a sponsor for BBE capstone is important to them. Read what they has to say about their experience as a sponsor.

Why did you decide to become a capstone sponsor last school year (or any year prior)?

CS: I am a former BBE student and wanted to stay connected to the department, help mentor aspiring engineers, and tackle industry challenges with brilliant and creative students!

BW: We get involved to be able to interact with students we may hire.

What would you say to others who may be on the fence about participating as a sponsor?

CS: This program is a win-win! Your participation provides students with valuable industry experience that will help shape the next generation of engineers (and potential employees!). Your company will benefit as students apply critical thinking and creativity to your biggest challenges!

BW: It Is a good experience. You need to understand that not only are you helping students, but also interacting with those you may also eventually hire. It is important to bring your time for an hour or two a week.

Anything else you would like to share regarding your experience as a BBE capstone sponsor?

CS: I have had the great fortune to work with two groups of aspiring engineers so far! The students have reliably been motivated, professional, and incredibly hard working! Each year I try to improve myself as a mentor and feel like I have grown along with the students.

BW: It is a good way to participate and work with the University.
