Sarah Whiteside, Bachelor of Sustainable Systems Management

Sarah Whiteside has long brown hair and is wearing a white top with black embroidery with a maroon U of M honors stole for graduation.

Why did you choose BBE/SSM while attending the University of Minnesota?

I chose SSM for its multidimensional approach to corporate sustainability. It provides a comprehensive science background with a great selection of business courses.

Where do you currently work, and what do you do?

I am currently a Sustainability Analyst on the Corporate Sustainability, Inclusion and Social Impact team at Northern Trust. My role includes data management and analytics for the annual sustainability report as well as several sustainability assessments. Among other client and internal engagement, I help run the Sustainability Network, a global affinity group for employees to connect on sustainability topics and engage with Northern Trust's sustainability team.

How has your education from BBE/SSM impacted or influenced your life and career?

My education was foundational to finding my ideal career path and getting me to my current job. The U broadened my understanding of what I could pursue professionally as each class and professor offered new perspectives that helped me learn what I wanted to do. The opportunities offered to me through SSM and the U helped me become more curious and determined. Because of the U, I feel equipped to bring positive and equitable impact to any role I am in.

What are one or two of your proudest professional or personal accomplishments that occurred after graduating from BBE/SSM in which your education played a role?

I am proud of my efforts to grow the Sustainability Network at Northern Trust! I am a young person on a small team at a large company, so I wasn't sure how I was going to make a noticeable impact at the company. Through networking and creative new ways to engage employees, we are able to offer more educational opportunities to employees and help other employees get more involved in their passion for sustainability at work.

What advice do you have for current or future students interested in pursuing a similar career in your field?

My best piece of advice is to not be afraid to do things out of your comfort zone! Reach out to people who have a job you want in the future or attend the event you know no one else at. Networking is extremely valuable to getting roots in the sustainability field. The teams are small but rapidly growing, so take advantage of any opportunities that come your way.
