Jeff Chambers,
Bachelor of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering, 2012

Why did you choose BBE?

What brought me to the BBE program was the Engineering degree with focus on bio-based inputs and overall sustainability. I stayed in the program because of the tight knit community and accessibility of one-on-one interactions with professors and staff.

Where do you work and what is your job title?

I currently work at 3M as a senior product developer. Over the last 10 years, I've been in slightly differing roles within research and development at 3M. I started in the central Corporate Lab focused on process technology relating to production of Thinsulate™ insulation and N95 respirators. My current role is in product development for the Filtrete™ brand of HVAC filters and room air purifiers.

How has your education in BBE influenced your life and career?

My education at the U of M really laid the groundwork for a career in engineering and research. While a job is much different from school, the coursework builds the base to then learn on the job. Hands-on work in labs, university research jobs and internships were equally critical to gain experience, understand the day-to-day work and build a resume.

What is one of your proudest professional or personal accomplishments that occurred after graduating from BBE?

During the pandemic, I was one of many 3Mers to support the global scale-up of N95 respirators. In 2020, I spent around one month assisting in equipment checkout at our US manufacturing site. Much like finals week at the University, it consisted of hard work and long hours. With that experience, I then led the initial wave of equipment checkout in Singapore in early 2021. Overall, it was an amazing opportunity and very rewarding to play a role in a critical need in society.

What advice do you have for current or future students interested in pursuing a similar career in your field?

Study abroad! This is a golden opportunity to travel, experience other cultures and try out a different learning environment. I spent one full semester in Austria and absolutely loved it. With engineering prerequisites, I ultimately graduated in 4.5 years, but I knew that going in and I'd do it again. At a minimum, consider a summer study abroad program!
