We had another very successful department of BBE Showcase last week. The department’s showcase is an all-day event during which department of BBE students are honored for receiving department awarded scholarships, donors are recognized and thanked for their generosity, advisory council members are consulted for advice, and students and faculty present their latest research.

This year, our keynote speaker during this event was Dr. Saeed Fereshtehkhou, who is an alumnus of our department. He spent over three decades working in research and development and has over 15 U.S. Patents. He used his understanding of paper and wood products to develop new materials for consumer goods products. At Procter & Gamble, he worked as the Associate Director for Materials Science and Technology. He developed more innovative and effective films and nonwoven and absorbent materials that were used in popular brands like Swiffer, Always, ThermaCare, and Glad. He provided advice and shared words of encouragement with our scholarship recipients.

During our Poster Session and Networking Reception department of BBE graduate students and post-docs presented their latest research. You can find the full list of posters here.  Poster session attendees were able to vote for their favorite research posters. Current Ph.D. student, Leif van Lierop, won first place for his poster “Novel Associations between Phosphate Accumulating Fungi and Plants for Improved Uptake.”

Thank you to everyone who attended the department of BBE showcase and who helped to make it a success. We cannot wait to see you next year.
