Sharma, Jin to Join Department Faculty
Two new faculty members will be joining us: Vasudha (Vasu) Sharma on July 1 and Zhenong Jin on January 15, 2019.
Sharma will be an assistant extension professor of irrigation and water quality with a 70% appointment in SWAC and a 30% appointment in BBE. Vasu received her Ph.D. in the Department of Biological Engineering at the University of Nebraska. Her research focus was on the impact of variable rate irrigation and fertigation on corn yield, ET, and water productivity. We thank the search committee, which included John Nieber, and Chair Fabian Fernandez for coordinating a successful search.
Jin will be an assistant professor in the area of data analytics for precision agriculture. He earned his Ph.D. from Purdue University from the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Science with a dissertation titled “Crop modeling for assessing and mitigating the impacts of extreme climatic events on the US agriculture system.” Jin is currently working as a postdoctoral scholar in the David Lobell Lab at Stanford University. He has authored or co-authored 12 peer-reviewed publications from his research, which largely couples the use of crop growth models with parameters obtained from satellite remote sensing.
We thank the search committee for their hard work and diligence: Chair Bruce Wilson, Jason Hill, Pete Marchetto, Candy Hirsch, Steve Miller, Kevin Silverstein, Laura Zhang, and Susan Seltz, who provided administrative support to the committee.
