My current research project is an experimental bioreactor for denitrification that combines a standard carbon source and bacteria growth media (woodchips) with a supplemental carbon source (liquid ethanol) and growth media (plastic matrix). This system will convert nitrates into ammonia and provide better aquatic health. This system is easily implemented and should provide a viable alternative to traditional bioreactors, which make use of woodchips and require a large amount of earthwork to bury and eventually replace.
