Biodegradation – It Takes a Village

In the age of big data, metagenomic approaches to microbial community structure predominate, but a new study by Jonathan Schilling shows that simple chemical analyses of decayed wood can be used to reveal the underlying history of responsible microbial consortia.  This approach complements metagenomics by tying community make up to its ultimate consequence, while providing important chemical information that is useful for improved carbon cycle modeling.
